Monique Duurvoort : Klassiek/Modern

Monique Duurvoort combines in her classes elements and techniques from urban dancestyles like hip hop, streetdance and breakdance with elements and techniques from academic dance styles like modern, jazz and classical ballet (as how she does in her choreographies). The first part of her class consists of an extensive warming up where the attention lies on placement, strength, balance and pirouette techniques.
The second part of her class consists of learning one of Monique’s choreographies where again the focus is placed upon the use of elements and techniques from the different dance styles.

Monique Duurvoort is an upcoming choreographer from The Netherlands, who mixes elements from diverse urban dance styles, like hip hop-, street- and breakdance, pop & lock and electric boogie together with academic and modern dance techniques to make cross-over choreographies.
Monique worked for thirteen years as a professional dancer with The Dutch National Ballet.
Already at the age of 14, Monique came in contact with the Amsterdam underground club scene, where she first got in contact with the urban dance styles.
Over the years she studied and practised some of these urban styles herself. This gave her in the end an unique knowledge of movement within academic, modern and urban dance styles.

In 2003 Monique finished her carreer as a professional dancer to go and study Arts & Cultural Management at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam.
After doing some experimental choreographic work behind closed doors, she presented her first choreography for public in June 2005 (‘Meanwhile on the other side...’). This piece was received very well and she was offered a job as co-artistic director and choreographer at youth dancetheatre company ISH.

In 2007 Monique started to combine her work for ISH with making independant choreographies.
In October 2007, during the 10th anniversary of the ‘Dutch Dance Days’, a three-day dance festival which celebrates the rich history of Dutch dance, Monique Duurvoort was awarded a prize of € 12,000 to fund a new project.
The jury applauded her for her interesting ways of integrating different dance styles and techniques, her eye for detail, and her own specific style.

In 2008 Monique decided to become a fully independant choreographer. She now combines her work with teaching workshops and masterclasses..
